I used this book to study for the LARE Section 1. It’s a light read. A good introduction to project management with rules of thumb developed though years of experience. There’s nothing earth-shattering in here, but it’s a clear introduction.For the LARE Section 1 exam, I studied Project Management for Design Professionals by Ramroth, Construction Contracts, 2nd Edition by Hinze, the PPI LARE Review Section A Practice Problems and the PPI LARE Review Section A Sample Exam. I passed.
I got this as recommended reading for the Landscape Architectural Registration Examination (LARE) sections 1 and 2. It was by far the most read-able and informative book of the recommended books (also got Ready, Set, Practice by Sharky and Construction Contracts by Hinze). I had already taken a college course in project management and done some PM at work and this book's emphasis on PM for design professionals really puts all the pieces together -great stories and real-life examples to illustrate PM principles. Also, Bill is a University of Oregon alum - which is where I got my MLA - GO DUCKS!I actually bought a copy for to keep in our office because almost anyone could learn a few things from reading this book. The book is organized by topic and it is easy to just read individual chapters as needed.As for the LARE, the most relevant portions of this book based on the available sample questions were around project scheduling and control. Btw, I passed LARE 1 & 2 on my first try with about 1 solid month of studying evenings and weekends.
I purchased this book because it is on CLARB's website for the LARE. I found it very helpful and one of the more fun books to read. It was the cheapest of the books I could purchase for Section 1 and the way Ramroth approaches topics it was an interesting read. He also summarizes each chapter at the end which made for a very helpful study guide. Much of the stuff is common sense but until you really think about project management, it might not be as obvious.
Written by someone with a clear understanding of the design profession, this book rings true and is a great guidebook for new project managers.
This was a gift for my son, who is a Landscape Design Architeque. This book and eight others are required as preparation for an exam towards his stamp. He liked the detail and format of the book.Debbie
This is an excellent overview on project management, and gave me a better fluency with the subject. The historical context provided on the rise of project management as a science or discipline was fascinating - but not too long to divert me for too long from the present - and it even provided me some instructive anecdotes to use in discussions with clients and design and construction team members, to help clarify management goals on architectural projects.Where I found this book a bit weak is on acknowledging that in most architecture firms in particular, the greater role of project management as defined in this book is more typically broken down into several different peoples' roles/titles/territories. I wish there had been more attention given to how to manage a project when the so-called "Project Manager" in the architecture firm may not actually be the person in that firm who manages financial or contractual issues on projects, or even the one who is responsible for managing staff allocation.In a typical architecture firm it's not unusual for a project to have a Partner or Principal, a "Project Manager", and sometimes multiple levels of "Assistant Project Managers", all of whom have responsibility for only certain sub-sets of the overall project management role that this book describes. I found the book to rely too much on Project Management Institute definitions and conventions, which are not developed with design firms in mind. The book is title "Project Management for Design Professionals", but in large part it could be re-used for any profession (just cross out "design professional" and write in "pharmaceutical development teams" or whatever!) I would have preferred if there had been more adaptation of this information to a range of typical design firm scenarios.Overall it's worth the read, for a good general overview of management strategies, the players involved, inherent risks, some history, and basic fluency with management-related jargon. It's a book I wish I had read earlier in my career, prior to being thrown into a management role. I'd recommend it for anybody who is at risk of becoming a project manager in the near future!
Not what I expected. Was not even sure what to expect from a book like this... yes, I know managers have to know everything and be a super intelligent people. I am not super intelligent but still manage my company just fine. Thanks for letting me know. :)
Who would have thought that learning about project management could be so entertaining? Ramroth has included numerous examples, illustrations and commentary to propel readers through what would normally be a rather bland subject. I laughed out loud while reading and surprised not only myself, but also my napping children!
