Much of what we do in classrooms is intuitive, steered by what 'feels right', but all too often intuition proves a poor, sometimes treacherous guide. Although what we know about the workings of the human brain is still pitifully little, the science of psychology can and has revealed certain surprising findings that teachers would do well to heed.

Over the past few decades, psychological research has made real strides into understanding how we learn, but it's only in the last few years that education has become aware of these insights. Part of the problem is a tendency amongst teachers to resist being told 'what works' if it conflicts with intuition. Whilst we cannot and should not relinquish our professional judgement in the face of outlandish claims, we should at least be aware of what scientists have discovered about learning, thinking, motivation, behaviour and assessment over the past few decades.

This though is far easier said than done. Every year thousands of research papers are published, some of which contradict each other. How can busy teachers know which research is worth investing time in reading and understanding?

Here, David Didau and Nick Rose attempt to lay out the evidence and theoretical perspectives on what we believe are the most important and useful psychological principles of which teacher ought to be aware. That is not to say this book contains everything you might ever need to know - there is no way it could - it is merely a primer. We hope that you are inspired to read and explore some of the sources for yourself and see what other principles can find a home in your classroom. Some of what we present may be surprising, some dubious, but some in danger of being dismissed as 'blindingly obvious'.

Before embracing or dismissing any of these principles we urge you to interrogate the evidence and think carefully about the advice we offer. While nothing works everywhere and everything might work somewhere, this is a guide to what we consider the best bets from the realm of psychology.

Review
"This is a must-read book for every beginning teacher. And even the most experienced teachers will also find many new and useful things here. I certainly did." Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment, University College London "In an era when policy makers deem that teachers needn't be qualified, this book explores the complex psychological processes that underpin all teaching and learning." Alex Quigley, Director of Teaching and Learning at Huntington School and author of The Confident Teacher "A book of rapacious research, relentless drive and keen intellect. It works as an entry point into the history of cognitive psychology, presenting findings from an array of inter-related areas with such clarity that the previously forbidding is easily understandable to even the most distracted of ingenues. The key thing with this work though is that the evidence is not just presented and left to grow cold, but is sifted and judged so that easily implemented recommendations are made as to how a teacher might use such research." Phil Beadle, author, Rules for Mavericks "This book fills this yawning gap in our collective understanding of the way our students think and behave. Didau and Rose enable teachers to beat a path between the intellectual rigours of their subject and the patchy prior knowledge of their students. I look forward to seeing a copy of this book in every staffroom I visit." Stephen Adcock, Deputy Director Academies, United Learning and co-author of Headstrong: 11 Lessons of School Leadership "Every teacher, at any stage of their career, should read this book. It makes you think and challenges some of the assumptions, so that we approach the latest fad with a healthy scepticism and a determination to self-evaluate our own impact." Jackie Beere, author, trainer and school improvement consultant "In these days of such monstrosities as 'brain based learning' and the pursuit of 'the answer' when it comes to 'how to teach', this book offers salvation. What Every Teacher Needs To Know About Psychology should be the first stop and, more importantly, the last stop on every teacher's itinerary into this field. Disarmingly well written, and accessible even when it deals with some difficult concepts this book can serve as the teacher textbook for this area." Martin Robinson, teacher, consultant and author of Trivium 21st Century ..".manages to strike the importance balance between the world of cognitive psychology and practical application in the classroom. If you are interested in how students think and learn and want to use that knowledge at the chalk face, this is the book for you." Liam Collins, Headteacher of Uplands Community College and vice-chair of the Headteachers' Roundtable "I predict that a great many students will benefit from their teachers having read this terrific book. A very helpful and accessible guide to understanding the complexities of learning." Phil Stock, Assistant Head, Greenshaw High School "The perfect blend of research and thought-provoking questions for schools to grapple with. The beauty of the approach is that it opens up a range of issues and presents the research and then lets schools debate and move forwards." Oliver Knight, Headteacher at Greenwich Free School and author of Creating Outstanding Classrooms"

Review

"A hilarious, and exquisitely thorough, rebuttal for every time your parents bring up 'The G-Word.'" --Rob Kutner, writer, “The Daily Show,” “The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien,” author, Apocalypse How"  “The academic world is so full of humorless wonks and pedants, that Ruben arrives like a crazed party-crasher. It's as if a tweedy committee coma has been interrupted by someone from the roller derby. This very funny book also slings many sly arrows into an overstuffed and moribund culture that needs repair and reconfiguration.” -- Compound Calico, Moderator, RateYourStudents.blogspot.com  "Adam Ruben's book is funnier than even the funniest dissertation, thesis, lab report, or legal brief.  I wish my law school casebooks had been 10% as enjoyable to read." - Jeremy Blachman, author of Anonymous Lawyer  “Indispensable for any prospective grad student who wants to get a jump on his or her anxiety requirements. This book proves that years of obscure, excruciating academic toil can, in fact, make a meaningful contribution to society as a source of comedy.” -- Jay Katsir, writer for “The Colbert Report”  “Why waste a few years in grad school when you can waste a few bucks on this hilarious and insightful book instead?  You'll end up with the same career prospects (zero), but have had a lot more fun."  -- Jeff Kreisler, author of Get Rich Cheating  "Hilarious!  Adam Ruben has nailed the graduate student experience, and has done it with a great sense of humor....this is a true survival guide for anyone foolish, er, ambitious enough to embark on an advanced degree."-- Dexter Holland, Grad School Sufferer and Sympathizer (Lead Singer, The Offspring)

Funny and sad because the drudgeries of grad school are pretty accurate. I only gave it 3 stars though because the book wasn't as funny as I thought it would be. But he does hammer the point that unless you are truly passionate about being a researcher, don't do it! You'll have to suffer poverty wages while in grad school, you'll be overworked, and when you get out whether you go to industry or (gasp!) stay in academia, your financial prospects aren't commensurate with giving at least 5 years of your life to the pursuit of contributing something completely original to your chosen academic field. Really look into what life in grad school and employment is like after grad school before going.

Man, this book cut to the bone. I'm currently finishing my own PhD, and every page has got at least one cringe-worthy laugh that provides some comfort that is the slog of doing graduate school in science. Don't know how well it carries over to other fields, but man, some of those "Grad School Pro Tips" are the real deal. I've been told that you should read this before considering grad school, and that's for sure. It's funny because it's sad and true, not because it's hyperbole. And if you haven't read it, read it towards the end, because as above, it cuts to the bone. It's like how when I had an office job, I thought The Office (TV show) was horrifying, and then when I quit, I thought it was absolutely hilarious.

I have just finished up my first semester in the Sociology grad program at Western Kentucky University. I wanted a book to read that would guide me through the rest of my journey through the program, and would also be funny as well. I knew Adam Rubin's name from the food detectives show and saw that this was a funny book that might help me destress and decompress after my first semester.I was right! This book is a very lighthearted take on all elements og grad school: Choosing a program, being a GA, choosing your committee, going to conferences, etc. I found many things relatable. I plan to read this book at the end of every semester until I get my Master's, and hopefully I will pick up more tips and laughs along the way.

It is difficult to see the funny side of Graduate School....and even less funny if you are just going in, about to defend your dissertation or have just graduated...I have been all of these three and I found this book to be hilarious! I now teach and I recommend it to all my students...what a GREAT gift to both science and comedy...Adam Ruben is a super contribution to both disciplines.

I've been a fan of Jorge Cham's PhD Comics for several years. I even use a caricature he made of me as my profile picture most places online. But PhD Comics gets a little tedious at times and seems to miss dealing with the real dark humor that is the PhD student experience. Adam Ruben's book does a good job of filling this void.Of course, you probably didn't realize there was a void to be filled until about chapter three of your dissertation. Then you start realizing voids all throughout your life cause by your Stupid, Stupid Decision to go to Grad School. No, not caused by the book, silly! The voids are caused by your own choice!Get the book. Read it. Leave it in the grad lounge in your department.

It's wonderfully amusing but over 2 years after I read it I still think back to a lot of the things he said. It's an easy and quick read but very influential in the long run.

Having recently started in a graduate program I thought I would only be reading obscure journals and aged texts, but I was wrong. Thankfully there are aged journalists articles and obscure texts as well. Your book was a wonderful and humerus vacation without my advisor knowing I wasn’t doing work. I recommend selling future copies with a fake book jacket of some popular science journal as cover.

Maybe I was dumb for thinking this book would be written with any practical advice, but it really has none. All it is is a b*tch fest about the piles of academic work you can expect in a post-undergraduate program. If you are miserable and in graduate school, it is a quick read that could give you a few chuckles, only because misery loves company.
